Chapter 1
Butchering in Build 42
A dead animal is not food. It is a job. Butchering is the skill that turns it into meat, leather, bones and more.
The Butchering skill raises cut quality. Higher levels give better meat and more of it. XP comes from butchering animals, removing animal parts, and filleting fish.
Meat
Venison, beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, chicken. The reason you started.
Hides
Only from the hook. They become leather for clothes, bags and the forge bellows.
Bones and sinew
Tools, needles, bone armor and thread.
Heads
The brain inside tans the hide. Keep every head.
The butcher's loop
- Get a bodyHunt, trap, or cull the herd.
- Hang itBig animals go on the hook.
- DrainBlood into a container.
- SkinThe hide comes off.
- CutMeat, then the head.
- BonesThe skeleton drops. Collect it.
Why it matters
One deer done right feeds you for days and gives leather for a season. The same deer done wrong gives 2 scraps and a rotten pile.
Chapter 2
Build your butcher
Butchering is slow to train because it needs animals. A head start saves a lot of deer.
Rancher (job)
+3 Butchering and +4 Animal Care. Raise them and cut them. The natural pick.
Chef (job)
+2 Butchering and +4 Cooking. The kitchen butcher.
Hunter (trait, 8 points)
+1 Butchering plus Tracking, Sneaking, Aiming and Short Blade. The field butcher.
Fast Learner (trait)
130% XP in every skill.
Watch out: Keen Cook does nothing here
The Keen Cook trait affects cooking recipes, not butchering. The official wiki says so.
Watch out: point costs change
The game makers still tune traits and jobs. Always read the numbers on your own character screen.
Butchering is a normal skill with 5 books at 3, 5, 8, 12 and 16 times XP. Volume IV is called Master Butcher's Complete Guide.
Chapter 3
Knives and the hook
You need a blade with an edge, and for big animals, a hook to hang them on.
Knives
- Hunting knife, kitchen knife, meat cleaver. The usual tools.
- Stone knife or forged blade. Crafted knives work fine.
- The blade must be sharp. A dull knife fails at the hook. Sharpen it first.
Build a Butcher Hook
Find it in the Build menu. Place it outdoors or in a shed, out of sight of any livestock. It can never be moved once built.
Watch out: where you put it is forever
Near the freezer. Away from the pen. Away from where you sleep. Blood and rot are not bedroom decor.
Secret: the large hook
Large hooks come from garages, warehouses and hardware stores. Blacksmiths can forge one. Find it before you find your first deer.
Chapter 4
Small animals: no hook needed
Rabbits, birds, squirrels, rats, frogs and chickens are butchered by hand.
Butcher a small animal
Put the dead animal in your inventory with a sharp knife. Right-click it and butcher, or open the Crafting menu and use the small-animal butcher recipe on a surface.
| Animal | Typical result |
|---|---|
| Chicken | 1 whole chicken, 1 head, 2 feet, and a pile of feathers |
| Rabbit | Rabbit meat, bones, a head, a skull. A hide only on the hook. |
| Small bird | Small bird meat, feathers |
| Rat or mouse | A scrap of meat |
Secret: rabbits can go on the hook too
A rabbit on the ground gives meat. A rabbit on the hook gives meat, more of it, plus a small hide. If you want rabbit leather, hang it.
Secret: feathers are pillows
Chicken feathers stuff pillows and fletch arrows. Keep them.
Chapter 5
Big animals: the hook, step by step
Deer, cows, pigs and sheep go on the hook. Each step is its own action with its own reward.
Hang the animal
Carry the body to the hook. Right-click the empty hook and add the corpse. The animal now hangs.
Drain the blood
Right-click the hanging animal. Drain blood into a bucket or bowl. A sheep gives around 2.5 liters.
Take the hide
Harvest the leather. You get an unprocessed hide. This is the step the ground can never do.
Take the meat
Harvest the meat. This is where Butchering skill matters most. Higher skill, better cuts, more of them.
Take the head
Harvest the head. Later, extract the brain from it for brain tan. Head items rot in about 5 days, so use them soon.
Collect the skeleton
The stripped skeleton drops to the ground. Right-click it and collect bones. You get animal bones and sinew.
Watch out: the context menu sometimes does nothing
A known Build 42 friction. If right-clicking the corpse gives no butcher option, open the Crafting panel and run the recipe from there.
Chapter 6
What each animal gives
Every animal drops a different mix. The counts change with size, genetics, skill, freshness and whether you used a hook.
| Animal | Meat | Hide size | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deer | Venison | Medium (adults) | Sinew, bones, head |
| Cow | Beef, the most of any animal | Large | Lots of blood, bones, head |
| Pig | Pork | Medium | Bones, head |
| Sheep | Lamb | Medium | Wool if not sheared, bones, head |
| Rabbit | Rabbit meat | Small | Bones, skull, head |
| Chicken | Whole chicken | None | Feathers, feet, head, sometimes an egg |
| Baby animals | Less meat | Small | Same as the parent, smaller |
Watch out: yields feel small at first
Players are often shocked that a whole cow gives modest meat at level 0. The number rises with Butchering skill. It also drops hard for roadkill and ground butchering. This is by design.
Chapter 7
Meat quality and cut quality
Two things decide what ends up in your freezer: how the animal died, and how good you are with a knife.
| Factor | Effect on meat |
|---|---|
| Your Butchering level | Better cut quality every level. More usable meat. |
| Butcher hook | More meat than the ground, plus the hide. |
| How it died | Shot or slaughtered is best. Roadkill is far worse. |
| How fresh | A fresh body gives fresh meat. A rotten body gives rotten meat. |
| Animal genetics | Some animals have a better meat ratio. Breed for it. |
| Animal size | Bigger and older gives more. Babies give little. |
Secret: Angus for meat
Among cows, Angus is the meat breed. Holstein is the milk breed. Pick the herd for the job.
Yield estimator
A rough guess, built from the rules above. The game does not publish its exact formula.
Chapter 8
Bones, sinew, blood and heads
The parts most players throw away are the parts that start whole crafting chains.
Animal bones
Bone needles, bone hooks, bone tools and bone armor. Carving turns them into things.
Sinew
Tough animal thread. Bigger animals give more. It becomes sinew thread for Tailoring and binding tools.
Blood
Drained into a container. Players report you can drink it. Its crafting uses are still few.
Heads
Extract the brain. 1 brain plus water makes 1 Bowl of Brain Tan. That tans exactly 1 hide.
Secret: 1 animal tans 1 hide
Every animal gives exactly the brain its own hide needs. Never throw away a head until the hide is tanned.
Chapter 9
Hides and the leather chain
An unprocessed hide rots. Leather does not. 4 stations get you from one to the other.
- Softening BeamRemove flesh. Remove fur, or keep it.
- Brain tan1 brain plus 300 ml water.
- Tannin BarrelSoak the hide.
- Drying rack7 days in mild weather.
| Rack size | For |
|---|---|
| Small | Rabbits, raccoons, baby animals |
| Medium | Adult sheep and pigs, and de-furred deer leather |
| Large | Cows, and furred adult deer leather |
Watch out: fur or no fur is decided once
You can only remove fur before tanning. Most clothing wants furred leather. The Large Bellows for the forge wants crude, un-furred leather. Check the recipe first.
Secret: cut big leather into small
1 large leather becomes 2 medium. 1 medium becomes 2 small. A cow hide covers any recipe. The full chain is in the Hunting guide.
Chapter 10
Fish: filleting
Fish are butchered too, and it counts for Butchering XP.
Slice a fillet
Right-click an uncut fish with a sharp knife. Slice fillets. Bigger fish give more.
Secret: the safest Butchering XP in the game
You do not need a cow to start. Fish on a quiet riverbank, fillet them at home. A few fish a day is steady, zero-risk Butchering XP.
Chapter 11
Rot, roadkill and waste
The clock and the car are the two ways to ruin a carcass.
The rot clock
A dead animal changes stage about every 50 hours on default settings: fresh, then rotten, then a bloody skeleton, then bones, then gone. Rotten bodies give rotten meat. Butcher the same day.
Roadkill
Hitting an animal with a car kills it, but the body is marked as roadkill. Roadkill gives far less meat. It also damages the car. Early Build 42 let players farm deer with trucks. That was patched.
Watch out: bodies stress the herd
Dead animals near a livestock zone raise stress. Move them. Butcher out of sight.
Secret: the composter takes leftovers
Rotten meat and scraps go in the composter. Nothing is wasted.
Chapter 12
Training plan: 0 to 10
XP scales with meat. More meat, more XP. So skill, the hook and fresh bodies all feed the grind.
Levels 0 to 3: fish and rabbits
Read Butchering I. Fillet every fish. Butcher every trapped rabbit. Cheap, safe and daily.
Levels 3 to 6: the hook
Read II and III. Build the hook. Hunt deer or cull spare farm animals. Do every step on the hook: blood, hide, meat, head, bones. Each is an action, and each gives XP.
Levels 6 to 10: the herd
Read IV and V. A breeding herd is an endless supply. Cull the extra males. Big, fresh animals on the hook give the most meat and the most XP.
Secret: parts count
Removing parts gives XP too. Bones, sinew, heads, feathers. Do the whole job, every time.
Level by level: Butchering
The best single thing to do at each level. Read the matching book first when one exists.
| Level | Do this for most of your XP | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1 | Read Butchering I. Fillet every fish | Zero-risk daily XP |
| 1 to 2 | Butcher every trapped rabbit and bird | Small animals, small steady XP |
| 2 to 3 | Build the hook. Hang a deer, do every step | Blood, hide, meat, head, bones: five XP actions |
| 3 to 4 | Read Butchering II. A deer a week on the hook | Fresh big animals pay most |
| 4 to 5 | Cull spare farm animals out of sight | Ranch surplus becomes XP |
| 5 to 6 | Read Butchering III. Cows on the hook | The most meat, the most XP |
| 6 to 7 | Rabbits on the hook too, for hides | Extra step, extra XP |
| 7 to 8 | Read Butchering IV. Breed a herd for the block | Endless supply |
| 8 to 9 | Weekly slaughter day, full process | Routine |
| 9 to 10 | Read Butchering V. Keep the herd cycling | Same day butchering, never rotten |
