Chapter 1
Glassmaking in Build 42
Every window you break and every bottle you drink is glass that does not come back. Glassmaking is how you make more.
Glassmaking melts sand or broken glass in a furnace crucible, then shapes the molten glass with a blowing pipe and pliers into panes, bottles, drinking glasses, jars and lantern glass.
Panes
Level 0. Repair windows. The grind.
Bottles
Level 3 with a magazine. Water and fuel storage.
Jars
Level 5. The container the canning chain needs. Lids run out; jars do not.
The glassmaker's loop
- GatherSand with a shovel, or smashed glass.
- MeltIn a crucible at the furnace.
- ShapePipe, pliers, molds.
- CoolThe piece is done.
- Repeat4 pieces per crucible.
Why it matters
It is the most gated craft in the game. It also solves the one shortage you cannot loot your way out of: jars.
Chapter 2
Build your glassmaker
No job starts with Glassmaking. One trait does.
Artisan (trait)
+1 Glassmaking and +1 Pottery, and players report it knows all the glass recipes. The only real head start.
Crafty (trait)
130% crafting XP. No starting level.
Potter, Blacksmith (jobs)
Not Glassmaking, but they build the furnace and crucibles you will need.
Watch out: no occupation gives Glassmaking
The official wiki says so on the current version. Artisan is the only starting boost.
Glassmaking has 5 books at 3, 5, 8, 12 and 16 times XP. Volume II is called From Sand to Glass: A Journey.
Chapter 3
Should you bother yet?
Honest answer: not in the first month.
- Loot bottles. Crowbar intact windows for panes. Take jars from every kitchen.
- Start the skill when commercial glass and jars run out, or when you want a self-sufficient base.
- It needs a furnace, crucibles, a fired blowing pipe, pliers, charcoal, sand and 3 magazines. That is Pottery, Masonry and a lot of loot.
Secret: the payoff is jars
A glassmaker at level 5 never runs out of canning jars. Pair with a farmer and the pantry is infinite.
Chapter 4
Sand and broken glass
2 raw materials. One is renewable, one is everywhere.
Sand
Shovel sand tiles into a sack. Riverbanks, beaches, construction sites. Each tile gives a set number of scoops.
Broken glass
Smash a bottle or sweep up a broken window. Melts just like sand.
Secret: sand is also for crucibles and cement
Pottery and Masonry want sand too. Find several sandy spots and haul by car.
Chapter 5
The furnace and the crucible
Glass melts in the same furnace a blacksmith uses. You will share it.
Melt sand
At a furnace: a crucible of sand or broken glass, tongs or crude tongs, and charcoal. The crucible fills with molten glass.
The furnace is built with Masonry and blocks. Crucibles are Pottery 1. Charcoal comes from a charcoal pit or burn pile. See those guides.
Watch out: crucibles wear out
Each melt uses crucible life. Keep the potter's wheel turning.
Chapter 6
Tools: pipe, pliers, tongs, molds
Almost all of it is clay work first.
| Tool | Where from | For |
|---|---|---|
| Glass blowing pipe | Pottery 2. 2 clay and water, fired in the primitive kiln. | Every blown piece. |
| Pliers | Loot. Garages, toolboxes. | Every glass recipe. |
| Tongs or crude tongs | Carving or the forge. | Handling the crucible. |
| Sheet mold | Pottery 0. 3 clay. | Panes. |
| Other molds | Pottery | Bottles and jars. |
Secret: 2 of everything
Pipes and tongs break. Fire 2 pipes before you start.
Chapter 7
Glass panes: the level 0 grind
No level. No magazine by most reports. Just sand, heat and a mold.
Make a pane
With a crucible of molten glass at the furnace, the pipe, pliers and a sheet mold, craft a glass pane. 4 panes per crucible.
Watch out: one source says panes need the Carlow guide
Most guides say panes are level 0 with no magazine. One fan site says the Carlow Crystal Guide unlocks them. If the recipe is missing, that magazine is the first thing to check.
Chapter 8
The 3 magazines
The crafting tab looks empty until you read these.
| Magazine | Teaches |
|---|---|
| Carlow Crystal Guide | Drinking glasses at level 2 |
| Bottle Making at Home | Glass bottles at level 3 |
| Murano Glass Manual | Wine glasses and lantern glass at level 7 |
Bookstores, libraries, and some crafting rooms. Artisan reportedly knows them all.
Watch out: magazines do not give XP
They unlock recipes. Only Glassmaking I to V multiply XP.
Chapter 9
Bottles and jars
The 2 pieces that change how a base runs.
Glass bottle, level 3
Water, fuel and alcohol storage. Needs Bottle Making at Home.
Glass jar, level 5
The canning jar. The wiki lists it at level 5 with no magazine named. It is the reason to reach 5.
Secret: jars plus lids
You still need jar lids to can. Lids are loot, or later, metal work. Hoard them.
Chapter 10
Windows and lanterns
Panes fix windows. Lantern glass makes light.
- A pane repairs a broken window frame from the Build menu with Carpentry.
- Lantern glass at level 7 goes into oil lanterns for lighting without electricity.
- Wine glasses are for morale and for showing off.
Chapter 11
What each level unlocks
From the Steam 42.20 skill guide.
| Level | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| 0 to 1 | Glass panes |
| 2 | Drinking glass, with Carlow Crystal Guide |
| 3 | Glass bottle, with Bottle Making at Home |
| 5 | Glass jar |
| 7 | Wine glass and lantern glass, with Murano Glass Manual |
Watch out: gates move
The crafting menu is the final word.
Chapter 12
Training plan: 0 to 10
One crucible is 4 crafts. The plan is crucibles, sand and books.
Before level 0: the setup
Pottery to 2 for the pipe and crucibles. Masonry for the furnace. Charcoal. 2 sacks of sand. Pliers.
Levels 0 to 3: panes
Read Glassmaking I. Melt, blow 4 panes, repeat. Read the Carlow guide for glasses at 2. Read II.
Levels 3 to 5: bottles
Bottle Making at Home. Bottles are higher XP than panes. Read III. Jars at 5.
Levels 5 to 10: jars and lanterns
Read IV and V. Jars for the pantry. Murano for lanterns at 7.
Level by level: Glassmaking
The best single thing to do at each level. Read the matching book first when one exists.
| Level | Do this for most of your XP | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1 | Read Glassmaking I. Blow glass panes | No level needed, 4 per crucible |
| 1 to 2 | More panes. Read the Carlow guide | Drinking glasses next |
| 2 to 3 | Drinking glasses | Higher XP than panes |
| 3 to 4 | Read Glassmaking II and Bottle Making at Home. Bottles | The mid grind |
| 4 to 5 | Bottles by the crucible | 4 per melt |
| 5 to 6 | Read Glassmaking III. Jars | The reason to be here |
| 6 to 7 | Jars for the whole pantry | Volume |
| 7 to 8 | Read Glassmaking IV and Murano. Lantern glass and wine glasses | Top crafts |
| 8 to 9 | Lanterns for every room | Light and XP |
| 9 to 10 | Read Glassmaking V. Keep melting | Sand and charcoal are the limits |
