Chapter 1

Knapping in Build 42

No knife? No axe? No saw? Knapping makes all 3 from rocks you find on the road.

Knapping is the Build 42 skill for stone tools. You strike a flint nodule with a hammer to make a sharp flint flake. Flakes and nodules become stone blades, chisels, saws, axe heads, hammer heads and maul heads. Fit those on carved handles and you have a full tool kit with no shop involved.

🪨

Flakes

A sharp flint flake is a knife. 10 XP each. No skill needed.

🪓

Heads

Stone axe, hammer and maul heads for carved handles.

🧱

Chisels

The tool Masonry spends. Stone cabins start here.

The knapper's loop

  1. ForageStones focus, roadsides.
  2. KnapNodule into flake.
  3. CarveA handle. See the Carving guide.
  4. BindHead to handle.
  5. UseChop, cut, build.
  6. StopAt level 6 the recipes run out.

Why it matters

Knapping is short. It is also the on-ramp to Carving, Masonry and Blacksmithing. An afternoon here unlocks months of crafting.

Chapter 2

Build your knapper

Knapping is quick to level and has only 6 levels of recipes. The head starts are about the unlocks, not the XP.

Bushcrafter (trait, 8 points)

+1 Knapping, Carving, Foraging and Maintenance. Knows the Wilderness Survival magazine, which unlocks stone tool recipes.

Whittler (trait, 2 points)

Not Knapping, but +2 Carving. Every stone head needs a carved handle.

Park Ranger, Lumberjack (jobs)

Outdoors jobs with foraging bonuses that make finding flint easier.

Watch out: point costs change

The game makers still tune traits and jobs. Always read the numbers on your own character screen.

Knapping has 5 books at 3, 5, 8, 12 and 16 times XP, but you will rarely need past the third. Level 6 is the end of the recipe list.

Chapter 3

Finding flint

Flint is a stone. Stones are foraged, and they are everywhere along roads.

1

Forage with the Stones focus

Open Search Mode. Pick the Stones focus, or Firewood and Stones at level 0. Walk roadsides, navigation strips and vegetation edges. Flint nodules show up as stones.

Good to knowThe old "Flint" item is gone. It is Flint Nodules now.
2

Break a flint boulder

Some boulders are flint. Right-click one and Remove Mineral Deposit with a club hammer, pickaxe, sledgehammer or stone maul. You get several nodules and often flakes.

Secret: roads, not deep forest

Stones cluster along roads and edges, not in the deep woods. Forage the drive to town.

Chapter 4

The sharp flint flake

The first recipe. Also the best one. It needs nothing but a nodule and a hammer.

1

Knap a sharp flint flake

Hold a stone hammer, wooden mallet or knapping tool. Open the Crafting menu, Knapping category, Knap Sharp Flint Flake. Any craft surface works: a table, a stump, a boulder.

Need1 flint nodule and a hammer-type tool that is kept
You get1 sharp flint flake and 10 Knapping XP. No skill, no magazine.

What a flake is

  • It counts as a sharp knife in recipes that need one. Carving, butchering small animals, cutting cloth.
  • It is the head of the crude stone axe.
  • It is an ingredient in stone blades and awls.
  • You can research it to learn recipes. See Chapter 8.

Watch out: the hammer takes wear

The tool is kept but loses a little condition. Keep 2 stone hammers.

Chapter 5

The crude stone axe

The first weapon and first wood tool you can make from nothing.

1

Bind a flake to a branch

On a craft surface: 1 sharp flint flake, 1 tree branch or carved handle, and 2 bindings. Rags, twine, duct tape, leather strips or denim strips all bind.

NeedUsually Maintenance 1. This is a Maintenance assembly recipe, not a Knapping gate.
You getA crude stone axe. It chops trees and kills zombies. It breaks faster than a steel axe.

Secret: research the crude axe

Study a finished crude axe to learn better stone head recipes without a magazine.

Watch out: it wears fast

Level Maintenance so it lasts. Keep spare flakes and handles. Rebuild it when it breaks.

Chapter 6

Stone knives, chisels and saws

Past the flake, Knapping makes the tools other crafts demand.

ItemLevelUsed for
Stone blade1The head of a stone knife. Fit a small handle.
Stone chisel1Masonry. Cutting stone blocks.
Stone awlLowA needle stand-in for Tailoring. Pick Thread at Tailoring 1.
Flint saw3A saw for planks and carving recipes.
Long stone blade6Knapped from a nodule. A bigger blade.

Secret: the flint saw unlocks Carpentry

No saw means no planks. A flint saw at Knapping 3 turns logs into planks with no hardware store.

Chapter 7

Heads for handles

The heavy stuff. Each head fits on a carved handle from the Carving guide.

HeadMade fromBecomes
Stone hammer headNodule or stoneStone hammer. Also your next knapping tool.
Stone axe headFlintA proper stone axe. Better than the crude one.
Large axe and maul headsFlat stoneTwo-handed choppers and sledges.
Stone drillFlintThe drill some carving recipes want.

Watch out: big heads use flat stone, not flakes

Large axe and maul heads come from flat stones. Flakes are for knives and the crude axe. Check the "?" on each ingredient slot to see what fits.

Chapter 8

Research: learn by looking

Build 42 lets you learn a recipe by studying a finished item. Knapping is where most players first meet this.

1

Research an item

Right-click a sharp flint flake, a crude stone axe, or other finished tool. If a Research option appears, use it. You learn the recipes that item can teach.

ExampleResearching a flake can teach Stone Blade and Stone Awl.

4 ways to unlock a Knapping recipe: reach the level where it auto-unlocks, read the magazine, take Bushcrafter, or research a sample. Any one works.

Chapter 9

What each level unlocks

A short ladder. The official wiki says stop at 6.

LevelUnlocks
0Sharp flint flake
1Stone blade, stone chisel
2 to 5Hammer heads, axe heads, drill, maul heads, flint saw at 3. Exact order varies by patch.
6Long stone blade. The last recipe.

Watch out: the middle levels are fuzzy

Sources give different orders for levels 2 to 5. The crafting menu shows what you can make. Trust it.

Chapter 10

Knapping feeds masonry and the forge

Knapping is one third of a stone-age production line.

  • Masonry spends stone chisels to cut blocks for walls.
  • Pottery fires the crucibles the forge needs.
  • Blacksmithing needs a stone hammer and stone tongs before there is any iron.
  • Carving makes every handle. Knapping makes every head.

Secret: a stone hammer is a knapping tool

Your first stone hammer head plus a handle is a hammer. That hammer knaps more flakes. The skill feeds itself.

Chapter 11

When to stop knapping

Knapping is an emergency skill. The moment you have a real tool, stop spending nodules.

  • No knife? Knap. Found a kitchen knife? Save the nodules.
  • No saw? Flint saw at 3. Found a hardware saw? Stop.
  • No axe? Crude axe. Found a fire axe? Stop.
  • Need chisels for Masonry? Keep knapping those and only those.

Secret: level 6 is the ceiling

The official wiki says there are no recipes past 6 and recommends not power-leveling beyond it. Put the XP elsewhere.

Chapter 12

Training plan: 0 to 6

10 XP per flake, no gate. This is the easiest grind in the game.

1

Levels 0 to 2: flakes

Read Knapping I. Forage 20 nodules along a road. Knap them all. Flakes are knives, so none are wasted.

2

Levels 2 to 4: blades, chisels, a saw

Read Knapping II. Make stone blades and chisels. Flint saw at 3. Research what you make.

3

Levels 4 to 6: heads

Read Knapping III. Axe heads, hammer heads, mauls. Long stone blade at 6. Done.

Level by level: Knapping

The best single thing to do at each level. Read the matching book first when one exists.
